Respectful Pruning in the Vineyards of Pla de Manlleu

In Loxarel’s old vineyards in Pla de Manlleu, winter is a time of silence, sharp pruning shears and careful observation. During the vine’s dormant season, when the plant is at rest, we practise respectful pruning, a technique that places the vine’s health and longevity at the centre of every decision. Rather than pruning mechanically, we observe the architecture of each vine and intervene with precision, taking into account its history of wounds, the flow of sap and its natural balance.

Respectful pruning aims to minimise large cuts and preserve the vine’s internal sap pathways. This means making small, well-placed cuts that follow the vine’s previous growth, avoiding abrupt interruptions that can encourage wood diseases. In this way, pruning accompanies the vine over time, respecting its structure and helping it maintain a living, functional vascular system.

Applying this approach in the old vineyards of Pla de Manlleu is not only a technical decision, but also a philosophical one. It allows us to extend the productive life of the vines, improve their vegetative balance and support a more harmonious ripening of the grapes. The result is a more resilient vineyard and wines that express the landscape and identity of this place with greater precision.
