Before the flames arrive, the best form of prevention is a well-managed landscape. Or, as experts often say, wildfires are fought in winter.
Active vineyards, like other crops and livestock farming, help create an agriculturarl and forest mosaic that breaks up continous areas of vegetation and makes it harder for major wildfires to spread. This is precisely what we witnessed during the wildfire that affectedPla de Manlleu, in the municipality of Aiguamúrcia, this July, where vineyards played a decisive role in bringing the fire under control.
This often unseen yet essential role is recognised by the European Fire Wine Resilient Landscape certification, developed within the framework of the European FIRE-RES project. The certification recognises wineries committed to agricultural practivces that help make landscapes more resilient to wildfire.
At Loxarel, we have joined this iniciative because we belive that growing vines and making wine also means caring for the land.
