WINE TOURISM
Loxarel and
wine tourism
Loxarel unites wine and history in the Penedès, using an old Civil War shelter as a place to make its cava.
The limits of the DO Penedès are a guarantee for Loxarel when it comes to expressing the characteristics of its wines. Located on the Can Mayol estate, the winery preserves the old air raid shelter that the Republicans built under the Vilobí del Penedès airfield during the Spanish Civil War. This shelter became the base of the current Loxarel cava and is one of the most emblematic spaces on the estate and where the most prized sparkling wines rest.

Its historical importance is reflected in the collection of historical points of interest of the Spaces of Memory that marked the Democratic Memorial in the Penedès during the 2000s. In one of the two entrances to the shelter —currently in disuse— there is a historical explanation with some photographs of the planes and soldiers who had operated there, and old maps of what this construction entailed.
Once the war was over, the ancestors of the Mitjans family decided to save the building from being demolished, and years later, Josep Mitjans used it to let the first 1,000 bottles of sparkling wine rest that would be the seed of the current company.

“At this moment, the air raid shelter is the space where the best sparkling wines in the house rest”

The grapes we use at Loxarel to make our products come from the Can Mayol estate, and from the estates that the Mitjans Nin family owns in Pla de Manlleu, the highest part of the DO Penedès. The high-altitude grapes are responsible for some of the characteristics of the winery’s wines.
Aware of the growing demand for visits and activities related to the world of wine in Catalonia and the potential that the Penedès has as a wine tourism destination, at Loxarel we open the doors of the winery, the cava and the refuge, by appointment.
With a welcoming spirit, the Mitjans Nin family wants to share with visitors and customers the particular philosophy that we apply in our way of making quality wines with a differentiated label.
In addition to stepping into the vineyards where the grapes grow and seeing firsthand the winemaking process, from the vine to the bottle, you can enter the old air raid shelter to feel the silence of the rest of the winery’s most prized bottles of sparkling wine.
