On Tuesday, August 24, we kicked off the 2021 harvest. The first to be picked were the high-altitude Chardonnay vineyards of one of our main suppliers, Jaume Nin, located in Pla de Manlleu. Since the middle of last week, we have also begun harvesting Macabeu from the vineyards surrounding our estate in Vilobí del Penedès.
All our organic and biodynamic vineyards are harvested by hand, and the grapes are transported to the winery with the utmost care to ensure they reach the press in the best possible condition. A large part of the base must for our still wines and Clàssic Penedès sparkling wines ferments in clay amphorae of 500, 750, and 1,000 liters, enhancing mineral aromas and fruit flavors. At Loxarel, we were pioneers in reviving the use of clay amphorae as fermentation vessels for our wines.
Josep Mitjans, owner and oenologist of the winery, highlights that the lack of accumulated rainfall since spring will result in a smaller harvest this year compared to last year. However, the grape quality will be excellent, as the berries have remained very healthy.
