El Coll de la Coma de Selma, juny de 2025.– Loxarel has recently acquired a new estate at Coll de la Coma de Selma, situated at 750 meters above sea level, comprising three vineyards: two planted with Parellada and one with Merlot. At the end of June, the Merlot vineyard underwent top-grafting to convert it into a Xarel·lo vineyard, which is expected to produce fruit by 2026. But what does top-grafting mean? As Sebastià Pié explains in this video, it involves grafting onto a vine that had previously been grafted with another variety — in this case, Merlot.
Top-grafting is a technique that allows the transformation of a vineyard when the only change intended is the grape variety. By top-grafting with Xarel·lo, we return to an indigenous variety that is a hallmark of the winery’s identity. Although Xarel·lo has traditionally been a low-altitude variety, at Loxarel we are committed to cultivating it at 750 meters above sea level on red soil. The new vineyards are located next to those of Teresa Nin’s grandmother, Grandma Paquita.
